Sixteen years ago, Day One led an effort to provide a month-long calendar of alcohol and drug-free activities designed to enhance “protective factors” in youth. This is accomplished by increasing the number of accessible activities throughout the community that promote the building of developmental assets in young people. This endeavor was a result of youth concerns that August is a time when summer school, jobs, camps, and vacations are at an end, leaving many children with little or nothing positive to do. Youth Month seeks to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse, and related problems such as violence, among youth. Pasadena was the first city to proclaim August as Youth Month and we are the only community with such a program nationwide. Examples of activities offered during Youth Month include basketball camp, bowling, family picnics, talent showcase, dances, Teen Leadership Summit, field trips to the Getty Museum, Santa Monica Beach, Magic Mountain, and the beach, as well tours to local private and public colleges. All events and activities are offered free or at low cost.
